What the talk is about
David Ogilvy is one of the most famous advertising people of the 20th century, and he said Drayton Bird knew more about direct marketing than anyone. Drayton reached Ogilvy through two letters. Ogilvy & Mather then bought his direct marketing agency, and Drayton rose to become its worldwide creative head. In this talk, filmed in Bristol, he describes what Ogilvy was like at work and at home in his French chateau.
You'll learn why Ogilvy based his layout rules on research into comprehension rather than on what people liked, why he called charm the secret of success, and why he wanted everyone in advertising to spend a year in direct marketing first. The talk includes an archive clip in which Ogilvy tells his heads of office that they must win new business personally and that making speeches is a waste of time.
